Summer Event Highlights
As summer is drawing to an end and the kids are back in school, Cape May Cares is excited to share some of our successful events held over the past few months.
Tutor Time with College Students
Over the summer, we provided tutoring during school holidays. We are currently up to 5 year-round volunteer tutors, and are so grateful for their help. Our college volunteers met once a week with children from Cape May Housing to study, do some fun summer learning, and formed great bonds. They will stay in touch over the course of the school year as pen pals!
Our ‘regular’ tutors also met with the kids on a different day each week, for two wonderful days of tutoring every week, all summer. We are so happy to see the children thriving in a learning environment.
Adult Computer Classes
We are now offering adult computer classes for senior residents of CMHA and the homeless community, supported by Family Promise. We have two volunteers teaching residents about everything from tablets and computers to Microsoft Word and sending emails.
Contact Maryellen for more information, or if you know someone who would benefit from this service.
Tennis Camp at the Cape May Tennis Club
The Cape May Tennis Club sponsored 14 children to take part in one of their fantastic tennis camps over the summer. Overall, there were 9 children from CMHA, 2 from the Coast Guard, and 3 from Family Promise. Without the help of the CM Tennis Club, these children would not have had the opportunity to participate in such a camp. We thank the club again for sponsoring these children and giving them a fun and exciting experience!
Sailing Camp at the Corinthian Yacht Club
The Yacht Club sponsored Family Promise and CMHA children for a spectacular opportunity to sail over the summer. The children get to learn how to sail in Cape May’s beautiful harbour, meet new people, and have a blast in the summer sun.
Backpack Donations from Presbyterian Church of CM
To finish up the summer, the Presbyterian Church of Cape May filled and donated backpacks to CMHA children ranging from pre-k to high school. Cape May Cares had an ‘end of the summer’ celebration to distribute the backpacks and give the children a chance to socialize, eat ice cream, learn about the social worker, and get excited about returning to school with their new backpacks!
