Cape May Cares: Encouraging & Empowering Through Education & Experience
Our Mission
Cape May Cares is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to providing educational and community events and programs for local children, seniors, and lower income families in the Cape May area.
Cape May Cares was officially founded in June of 2018, but the true spirit of the organization began many years before in the hearts of Keith and Cathy Lafferty as their family and friends delivered Christmas trees to families, which later evolved to shopping, wrapping and delivering a Christmas gift for each child living at the Cape May Housing Authority on Broad Street Court.
Our Story
Cape May Cares was officially founded in June of 2018, but the true spirit of the organization began many years before in the hearts of Keith and Cathy Lafferty as their family and friends shopped, wrapped and delivered a Christmas gift for each child living at the Cape May Housing Authority on Broad Street Court. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces encouraged the Laffertys to find ways to help these families throughout the year.
Keith, who himself had grown up in a Philadelphia housing authority and went on to become a successful Emergency Physician, personally knew that outside encouragement and mentorship could make all the difference in the world to a child. With this in mind, the Laffertys began to enlist a small group of like-minded volunteers to help create meaningful programs and activities for the families and senior citizens living at the Housing Authority. And that, as the story goes, is how Cape May Cares was born.
Our Mission
Encouraging and Empowering through Education and Experience:
Not just a slogan on our logo, but the driving force behind Cape May Cares and the guiding principle at the heart of all we do.
Whether through educational programs or fun activities, Cape May Cares is working to help improve the quality of life for the children, parents, senior citizens, and disabled persons who live in the Cape May Housing Authority and other low income areas.
With a local volunteer base of talented residents, generous business owners and concerned citizens, we also strive to foster community involvement and enhance future opportunities for our fellow neighbors in need.

Miss Elaine made everything fun and simple, for example I was into Japanese style comics (Manga) and for our reading lessons she insisted on us reading mangas. We went through about 3 or 4 different series and I enjoyed doing it. Till this day, I'm reading more because of her.
Scholarship
Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be the first in my family to go to college and make something of my life. I am deeply grateful for the Cape May Cares scholarship, which helps me achieve my stable life and job goals. It will allow me to study at Rutgers School of Nursing and become the first nurse in my family.
Mentorship Programs
Thank you so much for helping my daughter get this job. I really am grateful for the amount of care and time and effort you have given my children.
Tutoring
I have loved being a tutor from the very first day. Every child is unique and special in their own way. Some are very engaging, excited, and motivated. Some are quiet and shy, but all have remarkable talents of their own. Tutoring has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience for me.
ESL
Working with a young woman who is struggling to improve her English so she can go on to college has been rewarding and an honor. She has had a difficult journey and I have been happy to work with Cape May Cares to provide this student with all the support we can. Cape May Cares does an incredible job with the kids!
Scholarship
This scholarship helps me achieve my goals because it is helping me and my family save more money for the next 3 years as a nursing student since my grandmother became seriously ill almost a year ago and we spent all our savings.
Youth Sailing Camp
These last two weeks have been some of the best days of my life. I got to sail my own boat - what a proud moment!
Senior Fun
Thank you for giving us an amazing party! We are truly “Lucky” to have Cape May Cares. It is a wonderful organization. I am so grateful to you all.
Breakfast with Santa
My daughter couldn't believe that she actually got to talk with Santa and tell him what she wanted for Christmas.
